Design Problem #5: Mathematiques for the Body

Designers: Issey Miyake and Hussein Chalayan

Exhibition:  Making Space at the Institute for Figuring – http://www.theiff.org/

Methods:  Pattern using only fractals (cubes).

Fabrics:  Crisp Natural Fiber / Plain weaves

Silhouette:  Futuristic
Constraints:  working in collaborative teams of two people, sketches generated through exquisite corps minimum repetition of single element minimum of 30 times, garment must cover 60% of the body. Students will be earn points for the following:

  • Sources images and Manifesto about your garment 1-3 pts
  • 5 flat sketches / 5 swatches of material exploration 1-3 pts
  • Pattern making / manila 1-3 pts
  • Construction completed garment 1-3 pts
  • Blog entries and documentation of work 1-3 pts

Design Problem #4:  collapsed constructions

Fabrication:  knit yardage, up cycled sweaters, t-shirts

Constraints: garments makes references to an everyday object, garment must cover 75% of the body. Students will be graded on the following:

  • Source images and poem about your garment 1-3 pts
  • 5 flat sketches / 5 swatches of material exploration 1-3 pts
  • Pattern making / manila 1-3 pts
  • Construction – completed garment 1-3 pts
  • Blog entries and documentation of work 1-3 pts

Design Problem #3 GLBT, Entertainment industry, age and income TBD by Designer.  Living in Los Angeles, Atwater Village, Highland Park, Venice Beach.  Needs a garment for awards show.

Students will be earn 1 point for the following:

Design Problem #2: Dress for an Artist/ Curator living in NYC, age 40-50.  Earns $180,000 per year, attends many social events at museums, galleries and other cultural institutions.
Students will be earn 1 point for the following:
